Is Using GPS Eco-friendly?

I have to admit it, I’m a daydreamer. Anyone who really knows me can attest to that. My mind is forever wandering off, imagining odd scenarios, coming up with more ideas than I will ever have the time to try. I just can’t seem to turn it off.
Unfortunately for me (and the environment), driving is one of those times when I find myself too easily distracted. Highway driving is verrrry boring and since we live in the middle of nowhere, I have to drive on the highway to get pretty much anywhere I want to go. As you may have guessed, my wandering little brain gets me lost quite often. I either miss my exit altogether or I get so involved in my ideas that I completely forget where it was I was going in the first place (it once took me 6 hours to drive from Ottawa to Montreal, normally a two hour drive, it was very nerve-wracking, just ask my Mom).
One of the first things that usually crosses my mind as I’m driving around, trying to either figure out where I am or finding someone to ask, is how much gas I’m wasting to do this. It makes me angry at myself that I’m wasting all this fuel and emitting unmentionable amounts of pollution. So, as much as I’ve resisted it, I’m thinking that in the end a GPS might not be as frivolous an investment as I previously thought. It just might be a lot more eco-friendly than driving around aimlessly trying to find my way…..
If you already have your GPS and are getting ready to head out on vacation you can do yourself and the environment a favor by updating it at www.updateyourmap.com. Navteq technology and maps is what runs most in-car navigation systems and individual GPS devices. They help you find routes around traffic and they update 100 000 points of interest, like restaurants and gas stations (much “greener” and easier on your nerves than wasting time sitting in traffic or driving around for hours looking for a place to eat).
Since I know you’re all going to do the eco-friendly things like getting a tune-up, checking your oil and tire pressure before leaving on a road trip why not go one step further and update your GPS while you’re at it? Just follow the dropdown menus at www.updateyourmap.com to find the GPS system your using and in a matter of minutes you can be right up to date for your next family getaway.
